Former Nigerian Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, has issued a word of caution against Nigeria’s potential military involvement in addressing the political crisis in Niger Republic.
In a piece titled “Niger Republic: A Word of Caution to the Dogs of War,” Fani-Kayode expressed his reservations about the idea of Nigeria intervening in the neighboruing country’s internal affairs.
While Fani-Kayode acknowledged Nigeria’s formidable defense capabilities, he stressed that the nation’s military strength far surpasses that of all 14 West African countries combined. He noted that no nation in the sub-region could pose a significant military threat to Nigeria.

However, Fani-Kayode urged against Nigeria assuming the role of addressing France’s interests in Niger Republic, criticizing France’s historical neo-colonial actions in Africa as exploitative and damaging.
He questioned the idea of deploying Nigerian troops and sacrificing lives to aid France’s interests in Niger. Fani-Kayode emphasized the need to avoid participating in a conflict that could result in the loss of Nigerian lives for the sake of furthering France’s objectives.
Fani-Kayode drew attention to the contrasting interests of Western powers and countries like Russia and China in Africa. He noted that Russia and China have demonstrated a commitment to supporting African development, while Western powers have not always provided consistent support.
Highlighting the reluctance of Western allies to provide arms to Nigeria in the fight against terrorist groups like Boko Haram and ISWAP, Fani-Kayode questioned why Nigeria should consider intervening in a conflict that aligns with the interests of these allies.
The former minister cautioned against being embroiled in a proxy war between Western powers and Russia, warning of the potential destabilization and devastation it could bring to the West and North African sub-regions. He called for a diplomatic approach and underscored the importance of prioritizing Nigeria’s national interests.
Fani-Kayode concluded by urging wise counsel and restraint, emphasizing the need to avoid actions that could undermine Nigeria’s progress over the past decades and lead to unintended consequences for the nation and its people.
