Allegations circulating online have brought attention to a Chinese store located in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, accused of forbidding Nigerians from shopping there.
Situated at the China General Chamber of Commerce on Umaru Musa Yar’Adua Road, the grocery store has reportedly implemented a policy prohibiting entry to Nigerians.
Upon investigation, security personnel at the gate confirmed that the store management had indeed issued directives at the beginning of the year, redirecting non-Chinese prospective customers away from the premises without providing any explanation for the decision. The policy change, which came into effect in January, marks a departure from the previous practice where anyone could enter the store.

According to accounts from security personnel and store attendants, Nigerians are now barred from shopping at the store, with access limited exclusively to Chinese individuals. Despite efforts to seek clarification from management, no formal explanation has been provided for the discriminatory policy.
When approached for comment, the store’s management declined to provide contact information for the general manager, citing concerns over potential backlash. However, calls made to a listed contact number were unsuccessful.
In response to the allegations, the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission has pledged to investigate the matter, emphasizing the need to address discriminatory practices swiftly and effectively.
Senior Advocate Afam Osigwe condemned the discriminatory action, describing it as racist and urging prompt government intervention to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. Osigwe stressed the importance of upholding principles of equality and non-discrimination in all business establishments, especially those operating within Nigerian territory.
The incident has sparked outrage among Nigerians, underscoring the importance of addressing issues of discrimination and promoting inclusivity in society. As investigations continue, stakeholders are calling for accountability and appropriate measures to ensure that such discriminatory practices are eradicated from the nation.
