The British High Commission has announced the appointment of Mr. Jonny Baxter as the British Deputy High Commissioner (DHC) in Lagos, Nigeria. This appointment comes as Mr. Baxter takes over from Ben Llewellyn-Jones (OBE), who recently completed a successful three-year term as Deputy High Commissioner in Lagos.
With a wealth of experience in diplomacy and international relations, Jonny Baxter brings a diverse background to his new role. He most recently served as His Majesty’s Ambassador to the Republic of South Sudan from January 2021 to July 2023. Prior to that, he held the position of Deputy Director in the Finance and Performance Department at the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) – formerly known as DFID – from 2018 to 2020.
Baxter’s career has been marked by key leadership roles within the Department of International Development (DFID). He managed the Human Development Department from 2017 to 2018 and served as the Principal Private Secretary to the Secretary of State from 2014 to 2016. He also led the Higher Education Taskforce Secretariat from 2013 to 2014, all at the DFID Headquarters in London.
