In a shocking turn of events, Godwin Emefiele, the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), finds himself in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) at their National Headquarters in Jabi, Abuja. This unexpected development unfolded just hours after Emefiele‘s release from the Department of State Services’ (DSS) detention on Thursday night.
Although the EFCC has yet to provide official confirmation, an inside source has disclosed that Emefiele is now subject to an investigation concerning allegations of financial misconduct during his tenure as CBN governor. Moreover, there are suggestions that additional charges may be levied against him in due course.
Emefiele’s woes commenced when he was suspended from his role as CBN governor by President Bola Tinubu in June, subsequently placed under the care of the DSS. Subsequently, he was charged with illegal possession of firearms, with the charges eventually being dropped and replaced by a more severe 20-count indictment. These new charges encompassed allegations of conspiracy to commit procurement fraud.
