The European Union’s Foreign Policy Chief, Josep Borrell, has voiced his concerns over the recent developments in Gabon, where a group of senior military officers announced a coup and took control of the country.
Borrell announced that EU defence ministers are set to discuss the situation in Gabon and stressed that if the coup is confirmed, it could exacerbate instability in the region.
Speaking at a meeting of EU defence ministers in Toledo, Borrell highlighted the potential ripple effects of the Gabonese coup on neighboring countries already grappling with their own challenges.

He pointed to a series of recent political upheavals, including the seizure of power by the presidential guard in Niger, and emphasized the need for a comprehensive and thoughtful approach to addressing the situation in the region.
Borrell stated, “If this is confirmed, it is another military coup which increases instability in the whole region. The whole area, starting with Central African Republic, then Mali, then Burkina Faso, now Niger, maybe Gabon, it’s in a very difficult situation and certainly the ministers … have to have a deep thought on what is going on there and how we can improve our policy in respect with these countries.”
The EU Foreign Policy Chief underlined the significance of the situation for Europe and urged a collective effort to address the unfolding crisis in Gabon and its potential implications for the broader stability of the region.
As the international community monitors the situation in Gabon closely, the concerns expressed by Borrell reflect the growing unease over the potential consequences of political upheaval in a region already grappling with a complex web of challenges.
