ESUT gets Tax Compliance Award from FIRS

The Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT, has been conferred with the Tax Compliance Award by the Federal Inland Revenue Service, FIRS.

According to FIRS, the award was in recognition of ESUT’s outstanding tax compliance and meaningful contribution to FIRS goals in the 2024 tax year.

The Service, therefore, enjoined other institutions within and outside Enugu State to borrow a leaf from ESUT in fulfilling their tax obligations.

According to the ESUT Bursar, Dr. Augustine Ojeh, who received the award on behalf of the University on Thursday, April 10, 2025, the Service lauded ESUT for their commitment in fulfilling their tax obligations.

While reacting to the development, the Vice Chancellor of ESUT, Professor Aloysius-Michaels Okolie, stated that the institution has paid over N1.2 billion inherited debts to FIRS, Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission, RMAFC, Enugu State Internal Revenue Service, EIRS and other similar organizations between 2018_2021 tax year.

He further stated that ESUT has cleared backlog of such debts and would maintain the tempo to make it seamless for successive Management of the University, adding that the current administration has been managing meagre resources at her disposal in dealing with challenges in the institution.

“The current Management in the University does not want its successors to inherit debts which was why we cleared backlog of tax debts. I owe this feat to the support of the entire Management team and staff of the University. It is our hope that the template we have established would be sustained by our successors,” the Vice Chancellor said.

He further stated that the Management of the University has brought 150 four-seater seats to take care of the increasing number of students in the University, adding that another batch of 150 seats are on the pipeline.

While restating the commitment of his Management to the welfare of the students, he noted that 1000 mattresses were equally given to students living at the hostels recently.
