Enugu State government, under the leadership of Governor Peter Mbah, is set to commemorate the achievements of African football legend Christian Chukwu (MFR) in Lagos on December 13, 2023.
Emeka Mba, Chairman of the Organising Committee, highlighted that the celebration aims to recognize Chukwu’s significant contributions to Enugu State and Nigeria through his remarkable football career.
The event, featuring Allen Onyema as the chairman, will also acknowledge the support of individuals like Femi Otedola and traditional rulers who played pivotal roles in Chukwu’s recovery from illness two years ago.

The celebration follows a previous phase held in Enugu on June 23, 2023, where ex-Rangers and Super Eagles players gathered to honour their captain.

Chukwu, a key figure in Nigeria’s football history, will have his biography unveiled during the event, showcasing his influential role as both a player and coach in the 70s and 80s.
Notably, he led Nigeria to victory in the Nations Cup in 1980 as Captain of the Green Eagles and later achieved success as a coach, securing another Nations Cup win in 1994 and guiding Nigeria to its first World Cup appearance in the same year.
