Enugu Govt adopting multifaceted approach to address ‘japa’ syndrome in the Health Sector

The Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, on Monday disclosed that the state government is adopting a multifaceted approach to address the ‘japa’syndrome plaguing the Nigerian health sector.

Governor Mbah who spoke at the permanent site of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT, Agbani, Enugu State during the accreditation exercise by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, NMCN, stated that his administration adopted increased remuneration for health workers as well as improvement in health infrastructure to address mass exodus of trained medics to overseas.

He spoke through his Special Adviser on Health Matters, Dr. Yomi Jaye, assuring that the state government was equally investing in training of more doctors and nurses to fill the void created by those who left the shores of the country for practice.

He equally assured of the government’s commitment in quality healthcare delivery in the state, adding that “on assumption of office, the Governor saw decadence in health sector and non-accreditation in nursing and medical schools and decided that all of them must have the recognition of the regulatory authorities and equally be provided with necessary infrastructure for optimal healthcare training and delivery to the people of the state,” he explained.

While lauding the support of the state government on ESUT, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Aloysius-Michaels Okolie, stated that over 45 programmes assessed within his two years of assumption of office presently enjoy full accreditation by the apex regulatory bodies.

He further stated that ESUT “is now the first choice University in terms of quality teachings, researches and innovations”, adding that the Institution is collaborating with relevant industries and firms to ensure that its graduands must have completed at least, three employability programmes before leaving the University.

He equally noted that the state government has provided all the necessary equipment to ensure successful accreditation of the Department of Nursing Sciences in the University.

Earlier while addressing the ESUT Management, the Registrar of NMCN, Dr. Farouk Abubakar, stated that his team was in ESUT to objectively assess the human and material resources in the Nursing Department of ESUT.

Abubakar who was represented by the Director, Standard and Accreditation, NMCN, Ndagi Alhassan, assured that the team was not in the University for witch-hunting, soliciting for the support of the University administration to enable them carry out their exercise.
