In a bid to enhance environmental cleanliness and curb improper waste disposal, the Enugu State Government has implemented a ban on dumpster scavenging across the state.
The Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Sam Ugwu, announced this measure on Wednesday, emphasizing the need for responsible waste handling.
Commissioner Ugwu warned against the improper disposal of refuse at dumpsites, highlighting that stringent penalties would be imposed on defaulters. To enforce this ban and foster a positive change in waste disposal habits, the government inaugurated “Refuse Marshals” stationed strategically at all dumpsites in the state.

“The Refuse Marshals are empowered to monitor ongoing activities around the dumpsters and apprehend scavengers who hinder the proper functioning of these sites,” stated Mr. Ugwu. Additionally, he cautioned against open refuse dumping and announced the revival of the state’s monthly environmental sanitation exercise, which had been suspended due to security concerns.
Since assuming office, Commissioner Ugwu has actively engaged the Enugu State Waste Management Authority and other relevant agencies to ensure their adherence to statutory expectations. He highlighted ongoing efforts to beautify the environment, including planting flowers at key junctions and tree planting initiatives in designated areas.
