Former Barcelona winger Emmanuel Amunike has emerged victorious in the race for the coveted position of head coach of the Nigerian Super Eagles. Reports indicate that the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has chosen Amunike to take the reins of the national team.
For Amunike, the role of Super Eagles head coach marks a significant milestone and perhaps his biggest challenge yet in his coaching career. The former Zamalek and Sporting Lisbon winger has demonstrated his coaching prowess in various capacities, most notably as the coach of the Golden Eaglets, where he led the Nigeria U17 national team to victory in the FIFA U17 World Cup.
Amunike’s coaching journey also saw him excel as the head coach of the Tanzanian national team, where he guided the Taifa Stars to qualify for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, ending a nearly forty-year drought for the team.

However, Amunike’s coaching record with clubs like Egypt’s Misr Lel Makkasa and Zambia’s Zanaco has been mixed, leaving room for improvement in certain areas. Additionally, his stint as the head coach of the Nigeria U20 team, the Flying Eagles, saw some challenges, with the team failing to qualify for the AFCON in 2017 under his leadership.
Despite facing stiff competition from other candidates, including USA U20 national team coach Michael Nsien, former Manchester City assistant manager Domenec Torrent, and Fortuna Sittard coach Danny Bruijs, Amunike emerged as the NFF’s choice to lead the Super Eagles into the future. With his wealth of experience and proven track record in youth and international football, Amunike is poised to bring his tactical acumen and leadership skills to the Super Eagles as they strive for success on the international stage.
