In a staggering revelation, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has alleged that over a 25-year period, at least 58 former governors have been involved in the misappropriation, embezzlement, or laundering of approximately N2.187 trillion.
This astronomical figure excludes the billions of Naira worth of properties that have been seized globally or are currently under investigation.
The magnitude of N2.2 trillion in looted funds is nothing short of alarming, especially when compared to the combined 2024 budgets of the South-East states and Lagos State, which stand at N2.29 trillion and N2.25 trillion, respectively. This amount surpasses the budgets of the North-Central and North-East states, which are N1.89 trillion and N1.60 trillion, respectively, by several billions.

This revelation sheds light on the pervasive nature of corruption in Nigeria’s political landscape and underscores the urgent need for accountability and transparency in governance. The EFCC’s efforts to root out corruption and recover looted funds are commendable, but they also highlight the systemic challenges that continue to plague the country’s institutions.
As the investigations unfold and prosecutions proceed, it is essential for the Nigerian government to prioritize anti-corruption initiatives and strengthen mechanisms for accountability to ensure that public funds are utilized for the benefit of all citizens. Only through concerted efforts to combat corruption can Nigeria realize its full potential and foster sustainable development for its people.
