EFCC Nabs 33 Individuals, Including 14 FUTA Students, for Alleged Internet Fraud

In a major crackdown on suspected internet fraud, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has apprehended 33 individuals, including 14 undergraduates from the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA).

The arrests were conducted by operatives from the Benin Zonal Command, who acted on intelligence and calls from concerned parents and neighbors.

The suspects were taken into custody at various residences in Akure following an extensive sting operation. The EFCC responded to community distress about the youths being enticed into cybercrime activities by the apprehended individuals.

During the arrests, law enforcement agents seized a substantial amount of evidence, including ten luxury cars, mobile phones, laptops, and a motorbike. The operation reflects the EFCC’s commitment to addressing the rising concerns associated with cybercrimes and the involvement of young people in such illicit activities.

The suspects are currently in EFCC custody, and investigations are underway to unravel the extent of their involvement in internet fraud. Once the investigations are concluded, the anti-graft agency plans to file charges against the individuals, highlighting the government’s resolve to combat cybercrime and protect the nation’s youth from being exploited by criminal elements.
