Arraignment of Opara Victor Uche for a Love Scam in Kaduna:
In a separate but equally significant development, the Kaduna Zonal Command of the EFCC brought Opara Victor Uche before Justice Joyce Asabe of the Kaduna State High Court. Uche is facing a one-count charge related to cybercrime, specifically for falsely presenting himself as Clara Hides from South Africa.
His modus operandi involved engaging several unsuspecting victims via an online social media application in an attempt to lure them into a love scam.
During the court proceedings, Uche pleaded not guilty to the charge. Consequently, the prosecution counsel, M.U Gadaka, requested the court to set a date for the commencement of the trial. The defense counsel, F.D. Kozah, requested bail for the defendant.
Justice Asabe granted bail to the defendant in the sum of N500,000 (Five Hundred Thousand Naira), with the condition of providing three sureties in like sum. These sureties must fulfill specific criteria, including being residents within the court’s jurisdiction, possessing landed properties with a Certificate of Occupancy, deposing an affidavit of means, and providing evidence of tax payment.
These recent operations by the EFCC underscore the Commission’s unwavering commitment to addressing cybercrime and bringing individuals engaged in fraudulent activities to justice. The EFCC’s proactive measures in combating cyber-related offences continue to serve as a deterrent to potential perpetrators, demonstrating that the long arm of the law will catch up with those who seek to exploit others through cybercrime.
