The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has filed an amended 20-count charge against the suspended governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court.
The amended charges include forgery, conferring of corrupt advantage, and criminal breach of trust, among others.
Initially, the EFCC had charged Emefiele with six counts related to an alleged breach of procurement procedure in awarding a contract to April1616 Investment Limited for the purchase of vehicles. However, the charges were later increased to 20 counts in the latest amendment.

Emefiele had earlier pleaded not guilty to the initial charges, and on November 22, 2023, Justice Hamza Muazu granted him bail in the sum of N300 million, with additional conditions such as providing two sureties with property in the Maitama district of Abuja and submitting his traveling documents to the court.

During the recent court session, EFCC’s lawyer, Mr. Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN), informed the court about the amended charges filed on January 10, 2024. Responding to the new charges, Emefiele’s counsel, Matthew Burkaa (SAN), requested time to study the amended charge sheet.
Justice Muazu adjourned the case until the following day for arraignment and also addressed Emefiele’s motion seeking a variation of the bail conditions to enable him to travel within the country. The court granted the variation but ordered that Emefiele should remain within Nigeria for the duration of his trial.
