In a bid to safeguard his position amidst brewing political uncertainties, the Deputy Governor of Edo State, Philip Shaibu, has turned to the Federal High Court in Abuja, seeking protection from possible impeachment and removal from office by his superior, Governor Godwin Obaseki.
The move comes in the wake of a growing rift between the two high-ranking officials, which has sent ripples through the state’s political landscape.
In a motion of notice filed before the court on July 28, 2023, and made available to journalists on Thursday, Shaibu appealed for an interlocutory injunction to avert harassment, intimidation, or embarrassment. He aims to continue executing his responsibilities as the Deputy Governor, including attending State Executive Council meetings, until the substantive suit is resolved.
The court documents identify the Inspector General of Police, State Security Service (commonly known as the Department of State Services), Governor of Edo State, Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, and the Chief Judge of Edo State as defendants in the case.
The strained relationship between Governor Obaseki and Deputy Governor Shaibu reportedly began when a viral video surfaced, showing Shaibu in the company of Senator Adams Oshiomhole, Obaseki’s predecessor, during the National Assembly inauguration in Abuja.
Since the video’s release, allegations of dehumanization and humiliation against the deputy governor by the governor have surfaced, further exacerbating the tension.
Adding fuel to the fire, it is alleged that Governor Obaseki convened a meeting with all members of the Peoples Democratic Party in the state House of Assembly, pointedly excluding his deputy. This exclusion has raised concerns that the governor might be considering impeachment proceedings against Shaibu.
Efforts to mediate between the two officials, including the involvement of former deputy governor Chief Mike Ogiadomhe, have so far been fruitless, signaling an impasse in resolving the escalating conflict.
The unfolding political drama in Edo State has captured the public’s attention, with citizens and stakeholders expressing anxieties over the potential ramifications of the ongoing feud. The court’s decision on the motion for an interlocutory injunction will be keenly awaited as it could significantly impact the state’s political dynamics.
Prior to the 2020 election, both Governor Obaseki and Deputy Governor Shaibu had been at odds with Senator Adams Oshiomhole, the former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress. The recent developments have only deepened divisions between the two camps, raising concerns about the overall stability of Edo State.
As the legal proceedings take center stage, the nation will closely follow the unfolding events in Edo State. The hope is that a peaceful resolution can be achieved, allowing the state government to function effectively and ensuring the welfare of its citizens. Nevertheless, the outcome of this court battle will be pivotal in shaping the state’s political trajectory in the days to come.
