The incident is believed to be connected to recent tensions between Shaibu and Governor Obaseki, stemming from rumors about Shaibu’s 2024 gubernatorial ambitions. This tension reportedly emerged following Shaibu’s return from vacation in the United States.
After being denied access, Deputy Governor Shaibu publicly reaffirmed his loyalty to Governor Obaseki, emphasizing that his loyalty is not contingent upon his own political ambitions. He referred to the governor as his elder brother and expressed his commitment to supporting Obaseki’s leadership throughout his tenure.
Shaibu stated, “I can tell you that from my Christian background if you make a vow with God that you want to do something, you must fulfil it. And the vow I have taken with God is that I will continue to support Godwin Obaseki as the governor of Edo State from the beginning to the end.”
In response to the incident, Sylvester Okungbowa, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Obaseki, defended the governor, stating that the security personnel were performing their duty to safeguard their principal. He clarified that the governor was not aware of the deputy governor’s intention to approach him during the event.
The incident highlights the underlying tensions and power dynamics within Edo State’s political landscape, reflecting the intricate relationship between the governor and his deputy as they navigate both personal ambitions and their roles in the state’s leadership.
