The Ebonyi State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the South Zone has strongly criticized former Governor and current Minister of Works, David Umahi.
The criticism comes in response to Umahi’s recent announcement that he will personally select his successor in the Senate.
Umahi, who previously represented the Ebonyi South Senatorial District, made the statement during a courtesy visit to Governor Francis Nwifuru on September 9. He declared, “I have the right to choose who will succeed me.”

However, the PDP in Ebonyi State has condemned Umahi’s assertion, describing it as “utterly unbecoming” for a public figure of his stature. The party pointed out that Umahi had vacated his Senate seat unilaterally to pursue a ministerial appointment without consulting his constituents in the Ebonyi South Zone.
Furthermore, the PDP accused Umahi of abusing his authority and interfering in the affairs of the Ebonyi South Senatorial District. The party stressed that the constituents have the sovereign right to democratically elect their representatives in the National Assembly.
The PDP urged Umahi to focus on his responsibilities as Minister of Works and refrain from meddling in the Senate succession matters of Ebonyi South Senatorial District. The statement from the party reflects growing concerns about Umahi’s influence in the state’s political landscape, especially given his prior role as governor.
