An incident in Garki Modern Market, Abuja, involving Department of State Service (DSS) operatives attempting to arrest a tailor has led to pandemonium, with a stray bullet injuring a salesgirl. The DSS has launched an investigation into the matter.

Garki Modern Market in Abuja witnessed chaotic scenes when Department of State Service (DSS) operatives stormed the market to arrest a tailor. A viral video circulating online shows individuals in black uniforms, believed to be DSS agents, firing into the air to disperse a gathering crowd.

Several people can be seen attempting to flee the scene, while some neutral-looking policemen are trying to maintain calm.

According to a social media user with the handle @Isaac Dorcas, an unidentified lady had contacted the DSS operatives to apprehend her tailor, who allegedly failed to deliver her clothing order on time.

“…They came and not only shot him but a stray bullet hit an innocent sales girl sitting at her shop. They immediately took to their heels but were chased by the angry marketers. Highest level of lawlessness,” Dorcas wrote.

Responding to the incident, the DSS announced that it has initiated an investigation into the shooting involving its operatives. The altercation reportedly led to the injury of a woman and the aforementioned tailor at Garki Market.

Dr. Peter Afunanya, the DSS spokesperson, stated: “The attention of the Department of State Services has been drawn to an incident that occurred a few hours ago (September 7, 2023) between its staff and a mob at the Garki Market, Abuja.”

“Information at the disposal of the Service was that its FCT command responded to an SOS from their field operatives who allegedly came under a mob attack in the said market.”

The DSS has assured the public that it will communicate the details of its inquiries as soon as possible and emphasized its commitment to taking appropriate disciplinary measures if any staff members are found culpable or in violation of standard operating procedures regarding interactions with the public.
