Dr. Azeez Folorunso: First Nigerian to Earn Ph.D. in Aquaponics from USB

Dr. Ewumi Azeez Folorunso, hailing from Abeokuta in Ogun State, South Western Nigeria, has made history as the first Nigerian and African scholar to obtain a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in the field of Aquaponics. He earned this prestigious degree from the Faculty of Fisheries and Protection of Waters at the University of South Bohemia in Ceske Budejovice, Czech Republic. Dr. Azeez’s remarkable journey is an inspiring testament to his dedication and passion for aquatic sciences and sustainable agriculture.

His academic journey began with a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Fisheries Management and Aquaculture from the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (Funaab), Nigeria. Driven by his passion for aquatic sciences, he pursued advanced studies, earning two Master of Science (M.S.) degrees.

Dr. Azeez conducted research during his M.S. in Marine Ecosystem Management and Climate Change at Nha Trang University, Vietnam, where he focused on the impact of socio-economic factors and environmental hazards on the efficiency of shrimp farms. This research laid the foundation for his future work in aquaponics.

His pursuit of an M.S. in Sustainable Aquaculture at the University of St-Andrews further solidified his expertise in enhancing the sustainability of fish farms, contributing valuable insights to the aquaculture industry.

However, the pinnacle of Dr. Azeez’s academic journey was his Ph.D. in Aquaponics at the University of South Bohemia in Ceske Budejovice. His extensive research in this groundbreaking field earned him his Ph.D. on September 14, 2023, and he subsequently secured a prestigious Postdoc position from the same faculty.

Aquaponics, a sustainable food production system that combines aquaculture and hydroponics, has the potential to revolutionize agriculture.
