NSUKKA —-The Acting Vice Chancellor of the University of Nigeria Nsukka, UNN, Professor Oguejiofo Ujam, on Saturday, warned fresh students admitted into the institution to desist from every form of cyber-criminality, otherwise known as Yahoo Yahoo.
Prof. Ujam, while congratulating the fresh students, enjoined them to equally refrain from get-rich-quick mentality, stating that many young persons have ruined their lives and future through their involvement in different crimes while chasing quick wealth.
He made the call during his 51st matriculation address of the University, adding that the University has zero tolerance for examination malpractices and cultism. He said that defaulters are either suspended or expelled from the University.
“In this age of Information Communication Technology (ICT) and social media, the University frowns at all forms of ICT-assisted crimes, especially Cybercrime or internet scam or fraud, commonly referred to as “Yahoo Yahoo”.
” Instead of paving the way to instant riches, cybercrimes have destroyed many promising young people and led to their incarceration in various prisons. Next to that is the use or sale of illicit and hard drugs. One word that should be enough for the wise is: Desist!
“Some students have been known to drop out of school, maimed permanently, and demented on account of drug abuse and addiction and abuse,” he said.
He enjoined the students to live through the ideals of hard work, ethical consciousness and productive lifestyles, adding that the philosophy of the University demands that they become the best in all they do.
“I, therefore, charge you to live through to these ideals of hard work, ethical consciousness and productive life.Having said that, let this consciousness awake you daily to the singular fact that this first indigenous University in Nigeria demands that we strive to be first in all we do. Our underpinning philosophy is: “TO SEEK TRUTH, TO TEACH TRUTH, TO PRESERVE TRUTH AND TO RESTORE THE DIGNITY OF MAN.”
“We have adopted the last part of this philosophy, TO RESTORE THE DIGNITY OF MAN”, as our motto and we take it seriously. This University which you are formally admitted to today, boasts of the good reputation of being one of the biggest and most respected Universities in the world,” he said.
He also said “You must have heard of or read that character and behaviour are central to the University’s pursuit of excellence. That is why the degrees, diplomas, and certificates of the University are awarded only to those who have been “found worthy in character and learning”. We seek to produce truly educated, civilized, decent, and law-abiding citizens.
“Our students are also expected to live amicably and in harmony with other members of the university community, which includes fellow students and staff. This can be achieved by mutual respect, irrespective of differences in culture, religion, tribe, or habits. The University has also outlined several policies to support and protect students from exploitation, harassment, intimidation, and other forms of abuse at the hands of staff or fellow students.
“My administration will continue to implement these policies to ensure that students study in an atmosphere devoid of social encumbrances.”
