In a significant legal development, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Enugu Zonal Command has secured the convictions and subsequent sentences of 25 internet fraudsters in Anambra State.
This milestone was achieved on Friday, October 13, 2023, as these individuals entered guilty pleas for charges stemming from impersonation.
Before Justice Nnamdi Dimkpa of the Federal High Court in Awka, the following individuals faced the consequences of their actions: Kingsley Chekwubechukwu Ngwu, Anthony Emmanuel Ndubuisi, Onyia Chukwuka Christian, Chukwuneke Chibuike Nicholas, and a host of others.

Their crimes involved the fraudulent impersonation of individuals and the illicit acquisition of funds from unsuspecting foreign nationals.
The charges stemmed from their use of fake Facebook accounts, with some members of this group posing as foreign nationals to carry out fraudulent activities. All 25 defendants admitted their guilt when the charges were presented.
The EFCC’s legal team consequently petitioned the court for convictions and sentences. Justice Dimkpa subsequently meted out sentences of two years in prison to 22 of these individuals, with the alternative of a fine of N200,000.00 (Two Hundred Thousand Naira only). The remaining three, namely Onah, Aleke, and Nnachi, received a stern warning and were temporarily detained within the court premises for eight hours before their eventual release.
