A 33-year-old British nurse, Lucy Letby, has been convicted of murdering seven newborn babies and attempting to kill six others in the neonatal unit of a hospital in northwest England where she worked.
The verdict was delivered following a 10-month trial at Manchester Crown Court. Letby will be sentenced on Monday and faces the possibility of a very long prison term, potentially including a rare full life sentence.
Letby was found guilty of killing five baby boys and two baby girls at the Countess of Chester hospital and of attacking other newborns between 2015 and 2016, often during her night shifts.

The jury was unable to reach a verdict on six other suspected attacks, and she was found not guilty of two attempted murders.
During the trial, prosecutors revealed that Letby had injected some of her infant victims with insulin, while others were injected with air or force-fed milk, often in multiple attacks before their deaths.
A handwritten note found by police officers in her home read, “I killed them on purpose because I’m not good enough to care for them. I am a horrible evil person. I AM EVIL I DID THIS.”
The extent of Letby’s actions was discovered when senior doctors became concerned about the number of unexplained deaths and collapses in the neonatal unit.
A police investigation was initiated, leading to Letby being identified as the person responsible. The trial heard that Letby had attempted to murder one baby girl four times before succeeding, and she even attacked twin babies in the presence of one of their mothers, saying, “Trust me, I’m a nurse.”
Throughout the trial, Letby maintained her innocence, claiming that she had never tried to hurt the babies and that she had only wanted to care for them.
She also suggested that unsafe staffing levels and unsanitary conditions on the ward might have contributed to the deaths. However, the prosecution portrayed her as a cold, cruel, and calculating liar.
While Letby’s motive remains unclear, further investigations are being conducted into her time as a nurse at the hospital and at another institution in Liverpool where she trained, to determine if there are more victims. Detectives have found no conclusive evidence to explain why she carried out these heinous acts.
