The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Nsukka Zone, Wednesday, mourned with the Vice Chancellor of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT, Professor Aloysius-Michaels Okolie, over his mother’s demise.
The Union which was led by its zonal chairman, Comrade Raphael Amokaha, during a condolence visit at ESUT, Agbani, Enugu State, equally lauded the administrative strides of Professor Okolie, especially in staff welfare, prompt payment of salaries, infrastructure facelift and timely promotion of personnel.
“We want to encourage our Vice Chancellor to remain firm even though we know how difficult it is to lose one’s mother. Be consoled that she lived a virtuous life and was able to raise wonderful children who would continue her legacies on earth,” Comrade Amokaha remarked.
The chairman equally intimated ESUT Management on the ASUU election which would hold in the University on the 29th of August, 2024, following the expiration of office of its current ESUT chairman, Comrade Chinedu Aguba.
Also, the ASUU National Resource Person, Comrade Ralph Ofukwu, while commending the administrative strides of the Vice Chancellor said “If you see us come to anybody, it means the person is doing well. If he is not doing well, we would be outside fighting him. ASUU is happy with your stewardship in ESUT, being a former chairman of the Union at UNN, we are not disappointed on how you have promoted the staff welfare in ESUT as the Vice Chancellor.”
He further enjoined the Vice Chancellor to implement the payment of Earned Academic Allowance, EAA, in the University.
Also in his vote of thanks, Professor Simon Ejembi, of the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi, Benue State, said the Union is happy with the administrative ingenuity of the Vice Chancellor and his Management, enjoining him to maintain the tempo in order to leave an impressive legacy on the history of the University.
The Vice Chancellor, Professor Okolie, who thanked members of ASUU for their solidarity visit, stated that the Management of ESUT has demystified administration in the University by making staff welfare its cardinal point.
He further stated that the University has recorded over 96% in NUC accreditation of programmes in the University.
While bemoaning the high cost of running a university in Nigeria, especially with regards to high electricity tariff, he said that prompt payment of workers’ salaries remain the priority of his administration.
