The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) has taken a decisive step by suspending the administration of Comrade Chinedu Ihejirika, the former chairman.
The announcement was made on Friday by the Acting chairman of the union, Comrade Frank Ojiako, and the Acting Secretary, Comrade Chinyere Onwachu, along with other stakeholders in Owerri.
The decision to suspend the former chairman’s administration was based on several grounds outlined by the acting leadership. One of the key reasons cited was the failure of the suspended executive committee to present financial reports to the congress for nearly two years, a breach of the constitutional requirement for quarterly presentation of financial reports.

Comrade Frank Ojiako stated, “This is a serious constitutional breach that is both reprehensible and unacceptable.” Another concern raised was the unavailability of the union’s treasurer, who is the principal signatory to ASUU FUTO bank accounts. The constitution stipulates that in the unforeseen absence of the treasurer, a congress should be convened to elect a new treasurer. However, this process had not been carried out.
The acting executive committee also pointed out that the former chairman had been unable to conduct an election to fill the vacant position of the office treasurer. The previous treasurer had been on leave of absence in the United States for the past year. These issues collectively led to the decision to suspend the former executive committee.
To address the situation and restore normalcy, the ASUU FUTO chapter formed a committee of respected professors to intervene and propose a resolution. The acting executive committee has accepted their recommendations and expressed a strong desire for peace within the university.
While the former chairman, Mr. Chinedu Ihejirika, was reportedly preparing a response to his suspension, the ASUU FUTO chapter is taking steps to maintain stability and uphold the union’s values within the university community.
