The Court of Appeal in Owerri, Imo State, has ruled in favour of Lamido Apapa and recognized him as the National Chairman of the Labour Party, sacking Julius Abure from the position.
The court also directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to acknowledge and publish the names of all governorship candidates produced by the Apapa-led National Working Committee in Imo, Bayelsa, and Kogi states.
The decision of the court also led to the dismissal of the governorship candidature of Senator Athan Achonu from Imo State, along with others affiliated with the Abure-led faction of the Labour Party.

Apapa’s suspension as a party member had been contested, and he continued to assert his position as the “legitimate acting chairman.” The recent ruling overturns the previous Court of Appeal decision in Benin City, Edo State, which affirmed Julius Abure as the National Chairman.
This case highlights the legal battles that can arise within political parties, especially in matters of leadership and candidature. The court’s decision is expected to have significant implications for the upcoming elections in the affected states, as the recognized chairman will likely play a key role in shaping the party’s strategies and choices.
