President Tinubu Expands Wage Increase to All Workers

Femi Gbajabiamila, the President’s Chief of Staff, announced on Sunday that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s promise of a provisional N25,000 wage increase for low-grade workers for six months will now apply to all Nigerian workers.

The decision to extend the wage increase came in response to widespread criticism and concerns raised by the public following the initial announcement. Many Nigerians took to social media, particularly Twitter, to express their dissatisfaction with the policy’s initial limitation to only low-income workers.

Gbajabiamila clarified:

“After the chatter on Twitter regarding the provisional wage increase being limited to low-income workers, we discussed it with the President, and he agreed that all categories of workers will receive this wage increase.”

With this revision, there will be no distinction between low, median, or high-income workers. The new policy ensures that the N25,000 wage increase applies equally across all sectors and pay grades, benefiting a larger portion of the workforce.

Reactions and Implications

This decision has been met with mixed reactions. While some workers have welcomed the expansion, others remain skeptical about the government’s ability to implement the increase efficiently and without delays.

Economists and policy analysts have also weighed in, noting that while the wage increase is a welcome relief for workers struggling with inflation, it may place additional pressure on the government’s fiscal budget.

As the government moves forward with this wage increase, many Nigerians will be closely monitoring the implementation process. Key questions remain, including:

  • How will the government ensure timely and efficient payment?
  • What measures will be taken to prevent inflationary effects on the economy?
  • Will further adjustments be made to the policy in the coming months?

The expansion of the wage increase to all workers is a significant development, demonstrating the administration’s responsiveness to public concerns. However, its success will depend on how effectively it is implemented.
