Allen Onyema, the Chief Executive Officer of Air Peace, has expressed his concern over the lack of government support for Nigerian airlines and what he perceives as preferential treatment of foreign airlines on Nigerian soil.
Speaking on AriseNews Channel’s The Morning Show, Onyema emphasized the need for a level playing field for domestic carriers.
Onyema acknowledged a recent agreement signed by the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and the South African Civil Aviation Authority as a positive development for aviation in Africa. This agreement streamlines processes for pilots from South Africa and promotes aviation development across the continent.

He also commended President Bola Tinubu for his efforts in normalizing relations between Nigeria and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), describing it as a significant achievement.
However, Onyema highlighted the issue of trapped funds for Nigerian airlines in the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). He urged the government to address this issue and provide support to the local carriers. According to Onyema, Nigerian airlines have significant workforces and contribute to job creation in the country.
He criticized the practice where some foreign airlines use Nigerian airports as transit points, allowing them to pick up and drop off passengers on multiple routes within Nigeria, which is not common in other parts of the world. Onyema stressed that Nigerian airlines need government support to thrive and compete effectively.
The CEO of Air Peace called on the government to address the challenges facing domestic carriers and create a conducive environment for their growth and success.
