A Kenyan Pan-Africanist and human rights activist, Patrick Lumumba, has said that Africa’s liberation would not come through religious exercises alone.
He made the statement while delivering an address at a non-political and non-denominational programme called The Platform, hosted by The Covenant Nation in Lagos, Nigeria.
Lumumba, who is also a Founding Trustee of the African Institute for Leaders and Leadership, stated that to save Africa, it must address conflicts and governance issues. He pointed out that if the question of governance is ignored, the continent’s progress would be hindered.

He highlighted the challenges that Africa faces after elections, where conflicts often arise due to cutthroat competition for political power. Lumumba stressed that resolving these governance issues is crucial for the continent’s safety and development.
While recognizing the importance of prayer and fasting, Lumumba asserted that Africa’s rise would not be solely achieved through religious practices. He emphasized that freedom and progress for Africa would require effort, responsibility, and a commitment to addressing governance challenges.
Lumumba referred to biblical narratives, such as Abraham’s journey to Canaan, to illustrate that divine instructions often involve hard work and determination. He emphasized that Africans must take responsibility for their future and actively work toward a better continent.
He also encouraged the younger generation to consider the impact of their actions on future generations, emphasizing the importance of making positive changes for the benefit of those yet to be born. Lumumba’s message underscored the need for Africans to address governance issues and actively contribute to the continent’s development and progress.
