The African Union (AU) has announced the suspension of Niger from all its institutions and activities in response to the recent coup that unfolded in the country. The decision aims to exert pressure on the military junta and facilitate the restoration of constitutional order.
The AU’s move comes after the military junta in Niger failed to honour its commitment to transfer power back to the democratically elected President, Mohammed Bazoum. The suspension will remain in place until the constitutional order is effectively reinstated, according to the AU’s statement.
The AU’s decision is grounded in its adherence to key instruments, including the AU Constitutive Act, the Protocol Relating to the Establishment of the Peace and Security Council of the African Union, and the African Charter on Democracy, Elections, and Governance.

The statement reads, “The AU decides… to immediately suspend the participation of the Republic of Niger in all activities of the AU and its Organs and institutions until the effective restoration of constitutional order in the country.”
The AU further calls upon its member states and the international community to reject the unconstitutional change of government in Niger and to abstain from taking actions that could legitimize the illegal regime. The AU also commends the efforts of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in its endeavors to facilitate a return to democratic governance in Niger.
The AU recognizes the leadership of ECOWAS, particularly under the guidance of H.E. Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The statement urges AU member states to fully implement the sanctions imposed by ECOWAS and endorsed by the AU Peace and Security Council (PSC). The AU Commission is tasked with regularly updating the PSC on the progress made in implementing the imposed sanctions.
The suspension of Niger from AU institutions and activities underscores the AU’s commitment to upholding democratic principles and stability within its member states. The AU’s actions seek to support the restoration of legitimate governance and safeguard the democratic aspirations of the people of Niger.
