Abuja Building Collapse: Wike Orders Arrest & Calls for Reform
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has directed the immediate arrest of the owner of a collapsed two-storey building in Abuja. The tragic incident has heightened concerns over construction safety and regulatory enforcement in the capital.
The collapse, which occurred on Wednesday night, resulted in at least two fatalities, while 37 individuals were rescued and are currently receiving medical care. Emergency teams, including the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), have been actively assisting victims.
During an on-site inspection, Minister Wike emphasized the urgent need for improved building regulations and the faster resettlement of displaced residents. He criticized the delayed relocation process and called for a thorough review of construction standards in the FCT.
Authorities disclosed that the collapsed building lacked proper planning approvals. Mukhtar Galadima, Director of the Department of Development Control, confirmed that the area had been designated for resettlement, making the structure illegal.
Government’s Commitment to Safety and Support for Victims
Wike pledged that the government would cover all medical expenses for the injured. He reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to enforcing stricter construction laws to prevent future incidents.
Urban planning experts stress that adherence to building regulations is critical in preventing such tragedies. Authorities urge developers and property owners to follow proper approval procedures and prioritize safety in construction
