The National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal in Umuahia, Abia State, has made significant rulings, sacking three members of the House of Representatives elected on the platform of the Labour Party (LP) for various offenses.
- Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency: Mr. Ibe Okwara Osunwa, the LP member representing this constituency, has been sacked for non-compliance with the Electoral Act 2022. The petition for his removal was filed by the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Daniel Okeke. The tribunal ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to withdraw Osunwa’s certificate of return and issue a new one to Okeke.
- Obingwa/Osisioma/Ugwunagbo Federal Constituency: The LP’s Munachim Alozie, representing this constituency, also had his election nullified by another panel of the tribunal. The court ordered a rerun to be conducted within the next 90 days. The tribunal noted that Alozie’s declaration as the winner was a mistake, and his election cannot stand. The candidate of the Young Progressives Party, Ibe Michael Nwoke, challenged the LP’s candidate’s election, citing the margin of lead and other irregularities.
- Aba North and South Federal Constituency: Mr. Emeka Nnamani, the LP member representing this constituency, had his election nullified by yet another panel of the tribunal, this time for certificate forgery. The tribunal declared the candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Alex Ikwueche, as the winner of the election and ordered INEC to withdraw Nnamani’s certificate of return and issue a new one to Ikwueche.
These rulings demonstrate the importance of adhering to electoral laws and regulations and underscore the consequences for violations.
