In a significant escalation of tensions, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) have issued a 14-day nationwide strike notice to the Federal Government.
The move comes as a response to the perceived failure of the government to fulfill the 16-point agreement reached with organized labor on October 2, 2023.
Leaders of the NLC and TUC expressed deep concern over the government’s alleged disregard for the welfare of citizens and Nigerian workers despite the conscientious efforts of organized labor to foster workplace harmony.
The unions, in a joint statement, lamented the prevailing widespread suffering and hardship, stating, “it is regrettable that we are compelled to resort to such measures, but the persistent neglect of the welfare of citizens and Nigerian workers and the massive hardship leave us with no choice.”
The statement further highlighted the unions’ commitment to protecting the rights and dignity of Nigerian workers and citizens. The ultimatum issued by the NLC and TUC urges the Federal Government to honor its part of the understanding within the stipulated 14-day period, starting from February 9, 2024.
