The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr. Nyesom Wike, revealed on Monday that the ongoing battle against banditry and kidnappings in the Abuja metropolis is being hindered by insufficient equipment and operational vehicles.
During a media chat in Abuja, Wike highlighted the inadequacy of equipment in tracking criminals at some border communities of the FCT, leading to a surge in kidnappings. However, he assured residents that the security challenges would be addressed soon, thanks to the approval for emergency procurement by President Bola Tinubu.
Wike explained that the approved procurement is for digital tracking tools and operational vehicles to enhance the capability of security agencies in curbing kidnappings. He emphasized the need for special equipment to reduce crime levels, especially tools that enable tracking specific locations of phone users.
The minister acknowledged the lack of essential facilities and vehicles for security agencies and stressed the importance of motivation for personnel. He outlined the FCT Administration’s commitment to providing what each security agency requires through emergency procurement.

Wike disclosed that, despite prior requests for motorcycles for remote and mountainous areas, which were not provided, the FCTA has now fulfilled this need. Additionally, he emphasized the importance of establishing a Joint Task Force with a full command and control structure, equipped to respond effectively to security emergencies.
In conclusion, Wike acknowledged the financial investment required but emphasized the importance of addressing identified gaps in security operations.
