Tension in Ihekwuenu-Aku Community Over Destruction of Visually Impaired Man’s Home
Tension is brewing in Ihekwuenu-Aku Community, located in Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State, as the residence of Mr. Anibueze Nnadi, a visually impaired man, was recently destroyed by hoodlums. This alarming situation has raised significant concerns among community members and advocacy groups, highlighting issues of violence and land disputes that disproportionately affect vulnerable populations.
This is the second time Nnadi’s family’s constructed home has been subjected to destruction, with the previous incident occurring in September 2021 when it was nearing completion. The recurrence of such violence has deeply affected Nnadi’s family and has led to heightened tensions within the community.
The earlier incident prompted protests, allegations, and counter-accusations, ultimately leading to the intervention of the Enugu State Government under former Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi. The state’s involvement resulted in an investigation, which culminated in the suspension of the community’s traditional ruler, Igwe Christopher Okwor, for his perceived role in the conflict.
The latest incident took place around 11:50 pm on October 7, according to Mr. Sunday Ezemagu, Nnadi’s nephew. He described witnessing the destruction of the family home and identified the involvement of the son of a traditional ruler and his associates. This alarming revelation points to a possible connection between local power dynamics and the violence faced by vulnerable community members.
Nnadi recounted a terrifying experience, stating that he was forcefully awakened, beaten, and subjected to a harrowing ordeal as hoodlums destroyed his home. He expressed profound concern for his safety, emphasizing the urgent need for government intervention to prevent further violence and ensure his protection. “I fear for my life and that of my family,” he stated, calling on authorities to take immediate action.
Appeals for Government Assistance
Mrs. Victoria Amuka, Nnadi’s sister, made an emotional appeal for government assistance, urging authorities to safeguard her brother from further attacks and ongoing land-related disputes. Her call reflects the desperation felt by the family and highlights the need for protective measures for vulnerable individuals facing violence.
Community elder Mr. Sylvester Okpe emphasized that the land in question indeed belongs to Nnadi and urged those responsible for the destruction to cease their actions. “We must stand together to protect our own, especially those who are most vulnerable,” he stated, advocating for unity and support within the community to address such injustices.
The Head of Neighbourhood Watch in the community, Mr. Anthony Didiugwu, confirmed the incident and noted ongoing efforts to identify the culprits involved in the destruction. However, as of the report’s filing, the Enugu State Police Command had not received an official report on the matter, according to ASP Daniel Ndukwe, the Public Relations Officer. This lack of formal reporting raises concerns about the response of law enforcement in addressing community grievances and protecting citizens’ rights.
