At least 68 indigent students of Delta State origin studying at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) received the 3rd edition of the Chief Dr. Jude and Dr. Yolanda Ndudi Scholarship Awards on Sunday. The Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at UNN, Professor Ike Onyishi, who anchors the programme at the university, spoke during the disbursement ceremony. He emphasized the significant impact of the scholarship, stating, “This scholarship programme, now in its third iteration, has provided immense relief to the beneficiaries. In today’s challenging economic climate, even if the funds are not used entirely for tuition, they can cover essential upkeep costs, which have become a major burden due to inflation.”

“Some beneficiaries have graduated, and the funds assist with clearance fees, transportation, and other associated expenses. We trust that the students will use the money judiciously to address their financial challenges related to academic responsibilities,” he added.

Professor Onyishi noted that the enthusiasm among students for the award underscores its effectiveness, saying, “The way students clamor for the award and express gratitude upon receiving it demonstrates the tangible benefits it provides.”

He further highlighted how the programme strengthens student associations and revives cultural heritage at UNN, lauding Chief Ozah’s leadership and commitment to education and human capital development.

Selection Process and Beneficiary Feedback

The National President of the Delta State Students Association, UNN Chapter, Joachim Akpo, explained the selection process during the ceremony. Priority was given to indigent students, particularly orphans, and fresh students to foster a sense of belonging within the university community.

He also mentioned that the scholarship has bolstered the association’s strength and revitalized the Delta State Students Cultural Week. “Part of the funds have been remitted by beneficiaries to support the cultural week, making it more vibrant and memorable since the inception of the scholarship scheme,” he said.

Several beneficiaries, including Nkechi Onyegu (Ndokwa West) and Chinonso Nwafor (Aniocha South Local Government Area), expressed gratitude to Chief Ozah for providing a lifeline to their educational pursuits. They pledged to use the funds responsibly to achieve academic success.

The highlight of the ceremony was the disbursement of ₦30,000 to each beneficiary, underscoring the programme’s commitment to supporting students’ financial needs.
