ESUT’s Commitment to Rewarding Academic Excellence
The Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) has announced a scholarship offer for freshers who achieve a Cumulative Grade Points Average (CGPA) of 4.50 in their 100 level examinations. According to the University, such students can retain the scholarship and study without paying tuition fees until they graduate, provided they maintain a CGPA of at least 4.0 in subsequent years.
This was disclosed by the Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Aloysius-Michaels Okolie, during the 43rd matriculation ceremony held at Agbani, Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State on Friday. The ceremony marked the admission of 6,200 students into various disciplines for the 2023/2024 academic session.
Professor Okolie explained that the initiative aims to motivate fresh students to take their studies seriously and graduate with distinction. He further stated, “The University has designed a template aimed at encouraging and rewarding excellence in teaching, research, and innovation. We are passionate about our visibility and excellence in the global academic community.”
A similar template has been designed to reward excellence in management and administration for non-teaching staff, reflecting the University’s holistic approach to fostering excellence.
Matriculation Highlights and University Policies
While congratulating the matriculants for gaining admission, Professor Okolie emphasized the importance of timely payment of school fees and course registration. He warned that any student who fails to register their courses within the stipulated time will be deemed to have withdrawn voluntarily from the University. He also encouraged students to apply for voluntary withdrawal if they cannot participate in academic activities in any session.
The Vice Chancellor reiterated the University’s zero tolerance for cultism, examination misconduct, admission racketeering, and other anti-social vices. He noted that breaches of these policies attract varying degrees of sanctions.
Speaking during the ceremony, a member of the ESUT Governing Council, Professor Chinelo Igwenagu, commended the Management for organizing a decentralized matriculation—a first in the University’s history. Professor Igwenagu, who is also the Coordinator of Admissions, highlighted that this format allows parents and guardians to engage directly with the faculties where their wards are studying.
She added, “ESUT is now the most sought-after University in the South East because of its transparency in admitting new students. The University has strictly followed all guidelines issued by the Registrar of JAMB, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, in granting admissions.”
In his remarks, the Director of Academic Planning, Prof. Chike Anibeze, attributed the University’s rising prominence to the present Management’s efforts in addressing systemic challenges. He noted improvements in webometric ranking and research outputs, underscoring the institution’s progress under current leadership.
Some of the matriculants expressed joy over their admission. Notable among them were Eziani Sylvia (Department of Medicine and Surgery), Chiemerie Okoro, and Uchenna Joshua (both of the Computer Science Department). They pledged to work hard to graduate with distinction.
